Not a big fan.
You’re probably thinking its because I am just lazy and don’t want to do them, which has a lot of truth to it, but I have other issues as well.
Assignments that are structured for student analysis can usually, and most efficiently, be analyzed in a few short sentences. So why require (x) lengths or (y) paragraphs when it can be much more powerful to just answer the question, or analyze the quote, instead of dancing around the answer with a bombardment of information that the reader probably already understands?
I suppose if someone can really uncover something great and powerful within an essay that would be great, which I always try to do, but who really cares? The teacher who is looking to see if your grammar is correct or if you cited these sources correctly? Not likely. You can’t really make an impression with assignments of this sort.
School assignments are the bane of free time everywhere, but will probably help in the end, which is where that second level of understanding comes into play. Darn you secondary understanding.
By the way I love to use you in blog posts because I’m not allowed to in essays. You, you, you, you, and more you. Take that, system, you dirty scoundrel.
